What is MIPS?
A low friction slide insert that is more effective at concussion prevention than previous helmet designs.
How does it work?
Typically in a regular crash or fall concussions occur when the brain slams against the skull. When falling your brain moves in the same direction as your head at the same speed, but once your head stops moving, your brain wants to keep moving. This is because of the law of inertia. See the example here. MIPS technology aims to prevent this. The impact on your brain becomes significantly less with MIPS because the head is able to rotate after impact.

Do I need to switch to a different brand to get MIPS?
NO! Most companies are adopting this new technology in their existing helmets. Smith, and Bell have implemented this technology into their existing models. The only difference is in price and technology of the helmets. Helmets are still offered in the same style, color, and sizing as before, but now they have the MIPS technology pre-installed. The price increase is because of the additional technology and material that has gone into the helmets. Generally price differences are around $50-$60 more.
Is it worth it to upgrade to MIPS?
The point of a helmet is to protect your head and this technology increases the protection that a helmet can provide, so yes we think so. If safety is your goal in wearing a helmet then it is definitely worth the upgrade. Head injuries can have a significant impact on your life, and your riding. Prevent prolonged recovery time by avoiding the injury in the first place!
