It is time to dust off your mountain bikes and start thinking about riding with the girls again. We are excited to be offering the Steamboat Ski and Bike Kare Women’s Group Ride and Mountain Bike Clinics based out of Steamboat Ski & Bike Kare.
The groups meet on the courthouse lawn across from Steamboat Ski & Bike Kare, corner of 5th and Lincoln, on Tuesday nights at 5:45pm for a quick tech, question and get to know you session. Wheels down and ready to ride at 6pm. The first session will begin on Tuesday June 7th and continue until August 30th. We decided to start a little later this season because we don’t trust the weather … please keep an eye on Facebook for weather and additional updates.
The group rides will run every other Tuesday to encourage all levels and all women to get together and ride. This is not a guided or clinician led ride it will be led by one of you. The clinics for beginner and intermediate riders will now run alternating Tuesdays with guided advanced group rides leaving at the same time for those of you who just want to ride with other women at a higher level.
If you have not had a chance to join us, we would love to have you come on down. The format is very casual and open to women of all abilities even if you have never ridden on a trail before. We will be sure to make everyone in the group feels safe and confident. Biking is a great way to get fit, and we want to make sure that it will remain fun at the same time.
What are the clinics like?
When we first get there, we go over basic bike maintenance – cleaning your bike, changing a flat, etc. Then we talk about the skills for the evening and do demonstrations that apply. The group will break into groups based on skill and fitness level. Each group, led by a coach, will then go on a ride somewhere on the Steamboat trails and work on the clinic’s topic or enjoy a challenging group ride. The coaches are always open to questions and will give advice on any aspect of riding.
Why were the clinics started?
The clinics were started because we saw the need for women to be more active in the sport of mountain biking. Women tend to learn in a different way than men and are often frustrated with learning from men. We wanted to provide a supportive environment where women can ride together and learn techniques that many men don’t know. As women, we learn best by understanding the mechanics of the skills needed in order to finesse the bike over obstacles. Men can rely on brute force for most things. The clinics also provide an opportunity to meet other women who share your interest in biking. We hope that you will find riding partners that are at your same riding ability. This will only make you ride more often and also have someone to learn and share laughs with.
The constantly evolving ability of our riders have encouraged us to promote and organize group rides for the higher intermediate and advanced female riders, who want to be challenged and supported by other women.
Please feel free to use this forum to invite other women on your rides. This is YOUR group with a little help from us.
